The digital side of construction can serve a key role as well in narrowing the labor gap, observers said. Increasing use of technology can help create jobs, improve construction processes and even out the playing field, “therefore increasing the overall pool of available talent,” said Sarah Buchner, founder and CEO of New York-based construction technology startup Trunk Tools.
Technology also represents a wide-open area of opportunity in construction for women, Buchner said. “The construction industry was late to digitize but is catching up with a vengeance, and as we rely more heavily on technology to build in ways that are more efficient, safe and profitable, I am confident that more women will be there on the front lines.”
